Chelsea are hoping that they will finally be able to complete the signing of Everton defender John Stones later this week, after the 21-year-old made it clear that he wished to leave the Toffees, the Metro report.
The Merseyside club are desperate to keep hold of the centre-back, and have rejected three bids from the Blues, the Metro claim. However, Stones has now made a clear statement that he wishes to move to Stamford Bridge by handing a transfer request (via Metro).
And the Premier League champions have apparently reacted to the news by preparing a £40m bid that they hope will be enough to land the former Barnsley man, the Metro suggest.
The news is a massive blow to Martinez’s plans. After a challenging campaign, the England international had been a key aspect of the rebuilding process, and appeared to have his mind solely focused on performing well for the Goodison Park outfit after making a string of excellent performances to begin the season.
However, Martinez not only has to deal with the fact that he could be about to lose one of his star players, but that Stones’ departure would leave him with little time to find a replacement.
