Chelsea have reportedly begun negotiations to sign Zenit St Petersburg centre-back Ezequiel Garay as Jose Mourinho looks to fortify his defence before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, according to the Metro.
The Blues have endured a difficult start to the 2015/16 campaign, with their normally air-tight defence conceding eight goals in their first three games.
Chelsea’s chase of Everton youngster John Stones has already been well documented, despite The Toffees insisting that he is not for sale (via The Guardian).
However, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has now reported that Chelsea are showing an interest in Garay and are currently in discussions over the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
The Metro claim that the 28-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit from the Russian champions over the summer with Chelsea now looking like a realistic destination after Jose Mourinho personally requested the opportunity to make a move for him.
And should the deal go ahead, it would represent a productive end to the club’s summer transfer business having already boosted their ranks with Asmir Begovic, Radamel Falcao, Adbul Baba Rahman and Pedro.
