Chelsea have reportedly made an official approach to Paris Saint-Germain regarding defender Gregory van der Wiel, according to the Metro.
The move comes just a few days after Swansea took the most reliable back four from last season, and made them look silly at times. Although Thibaut Courtois was sent off for a challenge on Bafetimbi Gomis, it was Branislav Ivanovic that endured the most torrid time.
The Serbian was probably the most consistent player in the top flight last term, but he looked completely clueless as Jefferson Montero tore him apart down the Swans’ left flank.
That appears to have prompted Jose Mourinho to go into the market to find some extra depth, as the Blues look desperately thin in terms of options, with just Kurt Zouma also available.
Van der Wiel has been impressive since his move from Ajax three years ago. He has helped Laurent Blanc’s side clinch three successive Ligue 1 titles. However, the Metro suggest that PSG are willing to let him move on this summer, potentially paving the way for a Premier League switch.
