Chelsea’s hopes of signing Baba Rahman have suffered a setback after Augsburg rejected their £25m bid for the 21-year-old, according to the Daily Express.
The Express report that the Premier League champions have already agreed personal terms with the defender, but will have to pay the Bundesliga side a figure closer to £30m if they want the move to happen.
However, it seems somewhat unlikely that Augsburg will stand in Rahman’s way should the Blues decide against making an improved offer.
The club signed the left-back for just £1m last summer (via Express), so stand to make a huge profit on the youngster.
And while they stunned everyone last season by finishing fifth in the German top flight, the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Schalke will be backed to recover from challenging seasons, and return to a position from which they can challenge for a place in the Champions League.
And while the prospect of playing in the Europa League would have been something fans of the club could only have dreamed of not so long ago, it could prove to be a hindrance to their league form.
Having £25m to spend on strengthening the squad is likely to improve their chances of building on a promising campaign, even if it does mean losing their biggest talent.
