Nicolas Gaitan’s proposed move to Manchester United appears to be edging ever closer, after the Daily Express reported that his agent had flown to England to tie up a deal for the Benfica star.
The Red Devils have been monitoring the playmaker for a long time, and it appears that they may now finally get their man.
The Express report that Jorge Mendes is on his way to the north-west to complete the move, while the 27-year-old has reportedly said his goodbyes to his teammates in Portugal.
United are willing to pay as much as £28m for the Argentinian, who may soon be followed by Barcelona winger Pedro, and ideally one other signing, the Express suggest.
Louis van Gaal gave an insight into the system he intends to play this season during the opening game of the campaign against Tottenham, and it appears to be a formation that would suit Gaitan perfectly.
With a lack of striker options, van Gaal used three attacking-minded midfielders to work off Wayne Rooney. Gaitan has done a similar role for Benfica so should not find the transition to Old Trafford too difficult if the reports of his imminent arrival are correct.
