Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he will leave goalkeeper David de Gea out of the starting XI against Tottenham this weekend amid fears over his state of mind, the Metro reports.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer, but the Metro claims that the Red Devils aren’t keen to let him go for a cut-price fee despite him having just a year remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford.
Madrid are apparently prepared to play a waiting game to snap him up, and can sign him on a free transfer this time next year, though van Gaal is concerned that he is in no fit state to play because his head has been turned by all of the rampant speculation.
So much so that he has seen fit to leave him out of the starting XI for the opening clash with Spurs this weekend.
“De Gea will not play,” confirmed Van Gaal.
“A player is also a human being. He cannot manage that. We will have to see who starts.”
That means that new signing Sergio Romero will likely be handed his debut despite not playing a minute of pre-season action.
