Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, after the Daily Star reported that the La Liga side had lined up a replacement.
According to the Star, the Red Devils are planning to make a £35m bid for the 27-year-old, having placed the Argentinian at the very top of their list of defensive targets. And despite the fact that he was arguably Nuno Santo’s side’s best player last season, Louis van Gaal’s chances of landing him have apparently increased.
That is because Valencia are considering a move for Manchester City centre-back Eliaquim Mangala, the Star report. The 24-year-old endured a challenging first year at the Etihad, and the Star suggest that Manuel Pellegrini may be willing to let the Frenchman go, despite spending £32m on him last summer (via Star).
However, the Chilean’s stance may well change once he realises that Mangala’s potential switch to Spain may allow United to complete a move for one of their main targets.
