Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is reportedly considering dropping goalkeeper David de Gea for their Premier League season opener vs Tottenham Hotspur and will spend the next 48 hours assessing the Spaniard’s mentality, according to the Daily Star.
The Dutchman will apparently use a behind-closed-doors training match to decide whether to stick with the 24-year-old, or drop him for recent signing Sergio Romero at the weekend.
The Star claims that de Gea is desperate to return to Spain this summer with Real Madrid, who are still determined to sign the international stopper before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
Van Gaal was left unimpressed with the goalkeeper’s performances during their pre-season tour of the United States and was taken off at half time during a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint Germain (via The Guardian).
And the manager is now said to be concerned that de Gea won’t be properly focussed to deal with a competitive fixture, which could lead to him being dropped for the season opener with Tottenham on Saturday.
However, Romero is untested in a game scenario for United, and will play in the practice match opposite de Gea, where he will be able to give the manager a better idea about his readiness to step into the void.
