Manchester United have seen a surprising bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan rejected by the Bundesliga outfit, the Daily Express report.
Despite more pressing concerns, Louis van Gaal appears keen to ensure that the 24-year-old will not be moving to Arsenal, Juventus, or Bayern Munich. The Express claim that the three European heavyweights are also chasing Gundogan’s signature. However, the Red Devils have failed in their latest bid to land the player.
Although the Germany international’s talent is undeniable, van Gaal has already made several additions to his midfield this summer, and early indications suggest that the personnel are settling into the system the manager has chosen, nicely.
Meanwhile, the real problem with United’s squad is surely further up the pitch. A leaky Newcastle side left Old Trafford with a point and a clean sheet at the weekend because van Gaal has no choice but to play an out-of-form Wayne Rooney as the team’s main goalscoring outlet.
United fans will be furious if an – at the moment, unsuccessful – attempt to bring Gundogan to the club denies them finding another striker.
