Manchester United’s summer spending is about to pass the £100m mark, after the Metro reported that both Pedro and Benfica’s Nicolas Gaitan were set to complete their moves to Old Trafford.
The Metro suggest that the Barcelona man will be the first to join Louis van Gaal’s revolution, while the Argentinian’s signature will take the Premier League side’s total outlay to over £120m when he joins shortly after.
While United fans will be hoping that both long-awaited deals do get across the line, they will perhaps be wondering how they will both fit in the Dutchman’s first-team, giving the congested midfield has already been bolstered with several acquisitions this summer.
The Red Devils have added Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, and Memphis Depay during this window, and should they add Pedro and Gaitan, van Gaal will be able to boast arguably the most depth of any midfield in the country.
However, it may seem daunting to the incoming pair that they will have to battle so many players for a place in the starting line-up. While both – especially Pedro – are likely to jump straight to the front of the queue, they will know that their places are under threat if they are unable to adapt to the English game almost straight away.
And while the possibility of two more marquee arrivals is likely to please United supporters, they may have been hoping that given the strength in the middle of the park, van Gaal would have made a bigger effort to sign a new striker, where – in terms of depth – they are much weaker.
