Louis van Gaal is considering whether to spend £35m of the money made from the sale of Angel Di Maria on bringing Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi to Manchester United this summer, according to the Metro.
The Dutchman appears keen to bring in an experienced centre-back during this window, with the Metro reporting that Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos has also been linked with an Old Trafford switch. However, it is the Argentinian that is catching his eye.
Valencia do not want to let go of their key man, but may be forced to reconsider their stance should the Red Devils make a tempting offer.
While Ramos may have notched up more accolades throughout his career, it is not difficult to understand why van Gaal has switched his attention to Otamendi.
The 27-year-old is two years younger than the Spaniard, and if the Daily Mail‘s reports are correct, he will cost £30m less than the Madrid man.
He has also developed a partnership with United man Marcos Rojo at international level that helped Gerardo Martino’s side reach the final of the recent Copa America, where only a penalty shootout denied them the trophy.
