New Manchester United signing Memphis Depay has apparently told the club that he is ready to succeed the departing Angel Di Maria in the iconic number seven shirt, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Premier League clubs are due to submit their squad numbers for the 2015/16 season before midday on Friday, and United have held off from handing in their list as winger Di Maria finalises his £44.3m move to Paris Saint Germain (via The Telegraph).
And Depay, who will wear his first name “Memphis” on the back of his shirt, is in line to take over the iconic number when the Argentine finally seals his exit, which The Telegraph believe will happen on Friday morning.
The Dutch international has already earmarked the number for himself, as he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, should Di Maria’s move hit an unseen stumbling block, he will likely take the number nine shirt that he sported during pre-season, and was also worn by Radamel Falcao during the previous campaign
At least Memphis seems more eager to take up the challenge of living up to the great players that came before him more than Di Maria did.
