Chelsea’s hopes of landing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane appear to have been handed a major boost, after the Metro claimed that the 22-year-old was interested in making a switch to Stamford Bridge.
The Daily Express previously reported that the Blues had made an enquiry for the centre-back, and while the Metro suggest that Los Blancos are very much against letting him leave, the news of Jose Mourinho’s interest appears to have persuaded Varane to consider his future.
His main competitors for a place in Rafa Benitez’s side – Sergio Ramos and Pepe – have recently agreed new deals at the Bernabeu (via Metro), which provides a huge indication that Madrid are not looking to replace the experienced pair with Varane on a regular basis just yet.
Moving to the Premier League champions would provide the Frenchman with the chance to link up with former boss Mourinho, and with the Blues conceding seven goals in their first three Premier League games of the season, there is little question that Varane would be an automatic starter, should he join.
