Despite Rafael Benitez defiantly stating that he expects Karim Benzema to remain at the Bernabeu beyond this summer (via Express), it appears that some of the club’s hierarchy are not so confident about holding onto the Frenchman.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Los Blancos are expecting to lose the 27-year-old to Arsenal during this window, and are making plans to bring in a replacement.
While the Telegraph report that a deal could be left to be completed until just before the window closes, the Metro report that the two clubs are already in talks about a £45.8m move.
Arsenal have been quiet during this window, with Petr Cech being the only marquee name to arrive at the Emirates this summer. However, Gunners supporters will surely forgive Arsene Wenger for once again leaving the chequebook untouched for much of pre-season if they end up stunning everyone – like they did with the past acquisitions of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez – and manage to complete a deal for the Real Madrid man.
It appears however, the fans could have wait until just before the deadline for this one to get across the line.
