Real Madrid are hoping to complete a late deal to sign Liverpool full-back Alberto Moreno, according to the Metro.
Former Reds boss Rafa Benitez is concerned about the lack of depth on the left-hand side of defence following the deal that saw Fabio Coentrao leave for Monaco on loan (via Metro). The Spaniard would likely act as cover for current first choice Marcelo.
The 23-year-old featured regularly during his first season at Anfield, but has found opportunities much less frequent so far this season with new signing Joe Gomez – who is most comfortable on the right or in the centre of the back four – being preferred by Brendan Rodgers.
And while Mamadou Sakho’s ability to play on the left means that a deal for Moreno could well be given the green light by the Merseyside outfit, the club’s humbling defeat to West Ham could see the former Sevilla man reinstated into the side.
Gomez’s inexperience was highlighted against Slaven Bilic’s team, while Dejan Lovren’s woeful day against the Hammers reminded disgruntled Reds fans about many of his performances from last season, and so, it would certainly not be a surprise to see him dropped for Liverpool’s next game.
That would likely see Sakho – who was arguably the side’s best centre-back last season – return, and thus, remove the cover that would allow Moreno to move to the Bernabeu.
