Manchester United’s hopes of landing a Real Madrid defender this summer had already taken a hit with the news that Sergio Ramos was set to sign a new deal with Los Blancos (via Daily Express), but now it appears that his long-time partner in crime is also set to commit his future to the Bernabeu.
According to the Daily Express, Pepe – who has previously been linked with the Red Devils – is about to sign a new two-year contract with the La Liga side.
The 32-year-old has one year left on his current deal, and the Express suggest that Madrid were desperate to ensure that they did not become embroiled in another saga, like the one involving Ramos. They also didn’t want to lose the Portuguese on a free next summer, like they did with Sami Khedira earlier in this window (via Express).
The new contract should quash any speculation that Pepe will ever be playing for Louis van Gaal’s side. Once his new deal runs out, he will be well into the twilight of his career, making it seem unlikely that he will still appeal to the Old Trafford outfit.
