Southampton are reportedly in advanced talks with Napoli over a possible move for their defender Kalidou Koulibaly, as Ronald Koeman looks to conclude his summer spending, the Daily Star report.
The Saints had been linked with a potential deal for Celtic’s talented centre-back Virgil van Dijk, however, the Star are claiming that that move is on standby while the Bhoys attempt to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.
That has led to them making an £8.5m bid for Koulibaly, and Koeman admitted that adding someone who can play at the heart of his defence is the last bit of business he plans to do this summer (via Star).
“Everybody knows we are working at one more defender, and then I think we have a very good squad for this season. We have been a little bit unlucky in our injuries and we don’t have options at the moment,” he explained.
It has been a difficult start for the south coast side this season. They have lost Fraser Forster to injury, while defensive stalwarts of last season, Nathaniel Clyne, Toby Alderweireld, and the man often sitting just in front of them, Morgan Schneiderlin, are now playing their football elsewhere.
And their absence has been evident during their first two games, with the side already conceding five goals.
