Chelsea’s hopes of landing Everton defender John Stones have received a major boost, after the Metro reported that the Toffees had already lined up a replacement should the England international move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The Premier League champions have already had two bids rejected for the 21-year-old, but are planning to make a third offer of £30m, according to the Metro, which may enough to persuade Roberto Martinez to let Stones move on.
The Toffees are considering the possibility of making a bid for AC Milan centre-back Cristian Zapata (via Metro). They may find that they are able to prise the Colombian international away from San Siro during this window following the Daily Express‘ suggestion that the Rossoneri were closing in on a £17m move for Alessio Romagnoli.
That in turn is more likely to help Chelsea get their man as Milan may now be more willing to sell the 28-year-old.
The Metro’s suggestion that Martinez is already looking for the man that will fill the void that Stones may leave, would suggest that the club are seriously preparing for the former Barnsley man to go this summer.
However, the club also boast just two senior centre-backs currently, so Martinez will probably argue at this stage that he needs to bolster his options anyway.
