Chelsea will be without Thibaut Courtois for their trip to Manchester City, after the Belgian’s appeal against the red card he was given on the opening day of the season was unsuccessful.
The goalkeeper was dismissed during the second half of their draw with Swansea City, after bringing down Swans forward Bafetimbi Gomis just inside the penalty area, after the Frenchman poked the ball around the 23-year-old.
The Blues’ main argument against Courtois’ dismissal is likely to have been that Gary Cahill appeared to be coming round to make the chance more difficult for Gomis. However, Sky Sports News HQ confirmed that Courtois will now sit out the next three games.

That means that new signing Asmir Begovic – whose first job in competitive action for the champions was to pick the ball out of his net following Gomis’ successful spot-kick – will probably be between the sticks for the club’s next game, which is a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium.
Following Manuel Pellegrini’s side’s emphatic victory over West Brom, the game is being touted as a massive indicator as to who will be considered as the early favourites for the league crown.
