West Ham will desperately try to sign Queens Park Rangers forward Charlie Austin this week, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Mirror suggest that the Hammers had initially been put off the 26-year-old, who was also attracting Chelsea’s interest earlier in the summer (via Metro), after the Championship side slapped a £15m price tag on his head.
However, their stance has changed slightly, the Mirror report, following the injury sustained to Enner Valencia during their recent Europa League clash with Astra Giurgiu, which is set to keep the Ecuadorian out until Christmas.
With Andy Carroll also out for the first couple of months of the new Premier League campaign (via Mirror), Slaven Bilic is left with Diafra Sakho, Mauro Zarate, and former QPR loanee Modibo Maiga.
While Sakho enjoyed an amazing run – scoring in his first six Premier League games – he spent plenty of time on the sidelines last year, which will certainly be a worry to his new boss, while the latter pair have failed to be prolific in front of goal during their spells at the Boleyn Ground.
Nevertheless, the Hammers’ hierarchy are still not keen to pay the asking price for the man who scored 18 goals during his first year in the top flight, the Mirror report, and will thus offer Matt Jarvis in an attempt to pay just £11m.
