Here is Saturday’s news and gossip concerning Arsenal:
Former Gunners forward John Hartson has defended Arsene Wenger after the boss came in for criticism for failing to sign a single outfield player during the summer transfer window, the Daily Express report.
The news was compounded by Danny Welbeck’s injury problems, but Hartson has sympathy for Wenger.
He stated: “Why would he just add numbers to give himself a problem and put players on the bench and pay them astronomical wages?
“I totally understand why Wenger has not bought,” he added.
However, Paul Merson is less understanding, and believes that Arsenal should have strengthened while they had the opportunity, according to the Daily Express.
The former Gunners midfielder thinks his old side are already out of the title race, and the players know it.
“It puts severe pressure on the players and whatever they say at Arsenal, I bet those players know they will not win the title this season,” he said.
Defender Mathieu Debuchy has revealed that he thought about leaving the club after he lost his place in Wenger’s side to Hector Bellerin, the Daily Express report.
However, he has decided to stay at the Emirates and fight for his spot.
“Let’s say it [leaving] crossed my mind. But I want to be at Arsenal and to take my place,” he explained.
Despite Danny Welbeck being out until Christmas, Wenger has told Joel Campbell that he is free to leave the club, according to the Daily Star.
The Costa Rican has spent the majority of his time with the north-London side out on loan.
Finally, Real Madrid are hoping to sign reported Arsenal target Marco Reus next summer, the Daily Express report.
