Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has backed young full-back Hector Bellerin to soon take precedence in Vicente Del Bosque’s Spain squad ahead of Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta following his stunning debut season at The Emirates, according to the Metro.
The 20-year-old impressed last term when he took advantage of Mathieu Debuchy’s injury problems to end the campaign as Arsene Wenger’s first choice right-back. He kept Debuchy out of the side once he had returned to fitness and even played his part in helping the side win a second successive FA Cup.
Bellerin is yet to make his bow with the Spanish senior side but has represented his country at various youth levels and has collected two caps with the under-21s.
However, despite his relative inexperience, Arteta believes it won’t be long before the 20-year-old is in the running for a call up with the 2018 World Cup firmly in mind.
“I knew two years ago that he had the ability to be first choice at Arsenal and I can’t see any better right-backs in the next two years in Spain,” said Arteta.
“I know Hector and if he makes the right decisions in the next few months, I think he’s going to have a chance.”
Is that a swipe at Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta we detect?
