John Terry is set to be one of four first-team players that will be dropped for Chelsea’s Champions League group stage opener against Maccabi Tel Aviv, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Daily Express previously reported that Branislav Ivanovic, Diego Costa, and Cesc Fabregas were all set to be left out, but it now appears that Jose Mourinho has decided to change his mind slightly.
The Mirror suggest that Fabregas could well be given another chance, but Terry, and Nemanja Matic will both be dropped for the clash at Stamford Bridge.
Despite Matic scoring a screamer against Everton, there is little question that the pair have been well below the standards they set last season, in the opening stages of this campaign.
The Blues have conceded more goals than anyone else in the top flight this term, and while Terry has come in for criticism, the Serbian – who is arguably been the best holding midfielder the champions have had since Claude Makelele left – has been as much to blame.
The pair’s axing is likely to see Gary Cahill come back in the back four to partner Kurt Zouma, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek replacing Matic (via Mirror).
