Everton are planning to offer Chelsea target John Stones a new contract, but the 21-year-old is reportedly insistent that he will only agree fresh terms if it makes a potential Stamford Bridge switch easier, the Daily Mirror report.
According to the Mirror, the centre-back will only sign the improved deal as long as it includes a buyout clause that would help prevent the events of the summer, which seem to have damaged his relationship with the Toffees.
The England international handed in a transfer request amid speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League champions, who made four bids for the defender (via Mirror).
The Merseyside outfit’s stance remained the same throughout the window, even when the Blues’ fourth bid of £37m was made, the Mirror report.
And the Mirror add that Stones wants his release clause to be no higher than Chelsea’s final offer.
The defender received plenty of praise for the level of performance he maintained despite the rumours linking with a move to Jose Mourinho’s side, and this latest twist suggests that he is more than happy to continue in the same manner, as while a switch to Chelsea would be his ideal situation, he is willing to continue his development with Roberto Martinez.
