With a daunting trip to Old Trafford on the horizon, Liverpool face a nervous wait after the Daily Express reported that striker Christian Benteke has sustained a thigh injury while on international duty with Belgium.
Ahead of the crunch qualifiers for Marc Wilmots’ side, the Express report that while he is unlikely to feature against Bosnia, he may well return for the game against Cyprus.
The fact that the former Aston Villa man is likely to be back in action before returning to Melwood will give Brendan Rodgers a major boost ahead of the clash with Manchester United. But he will be watching the second of Belgium’s qualifiers very intently to ensure that his star striker comes through the match unscathed.
Following the embarrassment inflicted by West Ham last week, Rodgers will be desperate for a positive reaction from his players, and that may not be entirely possible should the 24-year-old return to Merseyside with a slight knock.
Based on the Red Devils’ performances so far this campaign, he will need to be at his best as Louis van Gaal’s back four have largely kept their opponents quiet, although like the Reds, they did suffer defeat in their last game which will give Rodgers and co confidence that they can take a result back with them.
