Liverpool are plotting a potential move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to the Daily Express.
The 23-year-old is being monitored by several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal, but it is the Reds that are hoping to swoop in ahead of their rivals for his signature.
Carvalho is likely to provide some much-needed depth to the holding role, should Brendan Rodgers decide to make a move.
The Anfield outfit were close to letting Brazilian Lucas Leiva leave Merseyside this summer (via Express), and while he has still featured for Rodgers’ side this season, his performances – barring a solid effort in the goalless draw with Arsenal – have been unconvincing, and have contributed to the Reds conceding three goals against both West Ham and Manchester United.
And if Rodgers wishes to continue with a 4-3-3 formation – although, he has also tried a couple of different systems – then he will need a deep lying midfielder of Carvalho’s calibre, who is able to provide the back four with plenty of support, but also be able to offer something going forward.
