Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed the Red Devils’ newest signing Anthony Martial to be a major success at Old Trafford, despite having to ask Morgan Schneiderlin who he was when speculation linked the Frenchman with the Premier League side, the Daily Express report.
The 19-year-old is the most expensive teenager in history following his deadline day move, which may cost United a staggering £58m after add-ons (via Express), and while Rooney admitted that he didn’t know too much about his new strike partner, he did tip him for a very bright future.
“I haven’t seen much of him play, to be honest, so I can’t say too much,” he said.
“He was fantastic against Arsenal last season.
“He’s got a lot of ability from what I’ve seen and I’m sure he’ll be a great player for us,” he added.
Very much like the England skipper’s move from Everton 11 years ago, there is a sense of trepidation surrounding Martial’s arrival given the huge fee involved for an unproven player.
And while the former Monaco man is slightly older than his new teammate was when he made the switch, they boasted similar records before their respective moves which may have given Louis van Gaal the confidence required to take the gamble.
And should he achieve what Rooney has done during his time at United, it may prove to be £58m well spent.
