Manchester United have placed Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane at the very top of their transfer target list as they attempt to bolster their defensive ranks, according to the Metro.
Louis van Gaal is a big admirer of the Frenchman, and hopes to begin negotiations about a potential deal during the next two transfer windows, the Metro report.
However, the Red Devils have got a tricky task on their hands if they wish to prise the 22-year-old away from the Bernabeu, as Rafa Benitez has made it quite clear that Varane features in what he considers to be his strongest side. And their chances of landing the centre-back have not been helped by the tension between the two clubs following the David de Gea saga (via Metro).
Although Daley Blind has made a good start to the season playing alongside Chris Smalling at the heart of United’s back four, his defensive frailties may well be exposed against the better sides in the Premier League, and thus, deny the club reaching the summit of the top flight.
Should they add Varane, they may well be a more complete side, and may be able to return to where they believe they should be.
