Barcelona have admitted that they are looking to get the ball rolling on a new deal for Brazilian superstar Neymar following reported interest from Manchester United over the summer, the Daily Express reports.
United failed to land any high profile marquee players during the transfer window, but still splashed out £36m on Monaco striker Anthony Martial (via Guardian) on transfer deadline day.
The Express cites that United were chasing the likes of Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and Neymar recently, but to no avail.
The Red Devils were reportedly prepared to spend £240m on the 23-year-old (via Express) only for the player himself to quickly shoot down their attempts to prize him away from the Nou Camp.
And now Barca’s technical director Robert Fernandez has revealed that the club have put plans in place to extend his deal with the Catalonian giants.
“It’s an issue that we will solve soon,” he told Spanish newspaper Sport. “We’ll talk with the father. We are very calm because everything that the player and his people convey, is that they want a continuation. And we want to continue. We must find a formula so that everyone wins.
“I will not start on the years and the amounts, or whether he will be the second highest paid because those are issues that the board should evaluate.”
Big name La Liga players have already been accused of using interest from Premier League clubs to boost their prospects of getting new deals as both Dani Alves (via Express) and Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos (via Express) were linked with Louis van Gaal’s side before penning new contracts with their respective clubs.
