Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel has admitted that he is keen to make the move to the Premier League, but has resigned himself to staying in Russia, the Daily Express reports.
Both United and Chelsea have been linked with the Belgian international’s signature this summer, though he was most recently tipped to join Italian giants AC Milan instead.
United had been keeping tabs on the 26-year-old, but were told it would cost them £70m to prize him away from the Russian champions.
Witsel has made no secret of his desire to leave Zenit, but with the window so close to closing he has now spoken about his disappointment at being made to stay where he is until January at the earliest.
“I will not leave anymore,” he said.
“Zenit took the decision yesterday because in that short time they cant find someone to play on my position.
“It’s a pity because I hoped to make a transfer.”
