Highly-rated Lazio centre-back Stefan de Vrij has reiterated his loyalty to Serie A giants Lazio and claims that he was only linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer because of his nationality, the Metro reports.
The 23-year-old Italian publication Il Messaggero that he has no interest in making the move to Old Trafford despite recent links, as he believes that he was only tipped to head there because of shared nationality with manager Louis van Gaal.
“People often associate me with Manchester United because Louis van Gaal is there, but I want to win with Lazio,” he said.
“All the Dutch players seem to be linked with them at the moment, but there was never anything in it.”
De Vrij was a part of van Gaal’s World Cup squad in 2014, featuring in all seven of the country’s games and even bagging himself a goal during the 5-1 demolition of Spain during the group stage.
Having spent five years with Eredivisie giants Feyenoord, he made the move to Lazio following the World Cup for an undisclosed fee (via Daily Mail) and went on to make 32 appearances for the Rome-based side in his debut campaign, scoring one goal in the process.
