A Champions League final is the biggest spectacle of club football. Over the years, we have witnessed some breathtaking football in the finals of the continental competition.
Here we will take a look at the top five Champions League finals from the last decade:
Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard scored for their respective teams during the regular time, but both teams couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes and the game had to be decided on penalties.
John Terry slipped on what could have been the winning penalty after Ronaldo had missed his spot kick.
Eventually, United prevailed, and the trophy returned to Manchester for the first time after 1999.
4: Bayern Munch Vs Chelsea (2012)
This one makes the list just for the drama at the end. Bayern Munich players must be having nightmares about this game to this day. They played Chelsea off the park on the night but somehow managed to lose the game.
3. Barcelona Vs Arsenal (2006)
This one ended in heartbreak for the Gunners. After losing goalkeeper Jens Lehmann to an early red card, the North London club managed to take the lead in the first half.
Arsenal’s lead lasted till the 76th minute when quick-fire goals from Samuel Eto’s and Julian Belletti in the space of four minutes broke Gooners’ hearts.
This triumph also started Barca’s period of domination in the continental tournament for the next decade. Including this victory, they managed to win four Champions League trophies in the ten years.
2. Bayern Munich Vs Borussia Dortmund (2013)
The all-German final lived up it’s billing, and both teams went toe to toe right up until the 89th minute when Arjen Robben popped up to win the game for Bayern.
This was a sweet success for Bayern after losing the last year’s final to Chelsea in an acrimonious final.
1. Real Madrid Vs Atletico Madrid (2014)
‘La Decima’ as Real Madrid fans fondly call it. Atletico Madrid seemed destined to win the final before Sergio Ramos scored the 90+3rd-minute header to equalize the score at 1-1.
The game went into extra-time, and that was it for Atletico as Real scored three goals in extra-time to win the final 4-1.
