FIFA Ballon d’Or 2015 is over. Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi won the football’s most prestigious award for the record fifth time to further cement his reputation as the world’s greatest footballer.
His win broke the streak of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the award on the last two occasions. The Portuguese international was the runner-up this year, and Messi’s teammate Neymar grabbed the third position.
Interestingly, FIFA has revealed the votes given by more than 500 national team captains, coaches and media representatives. So let’s who voted for whom:
Award winner Lionel Messi and runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo were each given a vote as the captains of their national sides.
As expected, neither of them named each other in their picks for the award. The Argentine star picked his Barca teammates Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta while the Portuguese star named his clubmates Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale as his nominations for the award.
Brazilian captain Neymar repeated the same pattern by voting for his club teammates Messi, Suarez and Ivan Rakitic.
In other interesting reveals, England skipper Wayne Rooney voted for Messi, Thomas Muller and his former teammate Ronaldo.
In terms of vote share, Messi received a clear majority with 41% of votes. Ronaldo received just 28% of votes while Neymar was far behind with just 8% of votes.
When it comes to Premier League, Chelsea star Eden Hazard led the way with 59 points while Arsenal’s star Alexis Sanchez was not far behind with 53 points.
Now, compare these numbers to 1,666 points received by Messi!
