Lionel Messi has won the Primera Division’s player of the month award for January, which surprisingly is the first time for the Argentine star, according to the BBC.
The award was established prior to the 2013/2014 season and over 20 other players were voted as best monthly performers in Spain since, so it’s a mystery why the Barcelona player and five time Ballon d’Or winner hadn’t added this one to his richly filled resume.
Messi scored six goals last month, including a hat trick against Granada along with goals against Athletic de Bilbao, Malaga and Atletico de Madrid, despite suffering a hamstring problem midway through January.
The 28-year-old follows team-mate Neymar in winning the award, as the Brazilian was recognised for the first time in November, with the pair being the only Barcelona players to claim the prize since its birth.
Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award twice, along with Atletico Madrid pair Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann, and Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela.
Current Chelsea striker Diego Costa was the first player to be crowned La Liga’s player of the month while playing for Atletico in 2013.
