Raphael Varane leads Manchester United’s summer transfer wishlist, as the Red Devils are looking to bolster the centre of their defence.
The 22-year-old defender from Real Madrid is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe, and is renowned for his explosive pace, technical skills and positional game.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United are targeting the Frenchman as they prepare to bring in defensive reinforcements, with Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte and Everton’s John Stones Stones also on their shortlist.
Jose Mourinho was known to be a big fan of Varane during his time at the Bernabeu, and could well be set for a reunion with the player should he take over at Old Trafford this summer, which the Portuguese himself has reportedly told friends.
Spanish news outlet AS even claim Varane is Mourinho’s top target. In 2014, the former Chelsea manager described the young gun as one of the best young players in the world.
The 22-year-old centre-back moved from Lens to Real Madrid for £7.5 million during the summer of 2011. The Red Devils were highly interested, but Zinedine Zidane’s influence convinced him to head to the Spanish capital.
