Tottenham returned home from their encounter with Fiorentina in the first leg of the Round of 32 in the Europa League with a 1-1 draw.
A strong hit by Federico Bernardeschi around the hour mark deleted Nacer Chadli’s first half penalty. Still, Spurs got away with a pretty solid result and are looking to finish the job at White Heart Line.
However, the contest was overshadowed by an incident involving Tottenham’s star Dele Alli and the Viola’s Nenad Tomovic.
In the 28th minute, both players fought for the ball in the one of the pitch’s corners, with Tomovic eventually falling to the ground. Alli looked to jump over him, but hit the Serbian in his stomach.
The question remains: did the former MK Dons starlet do it on purpose or not? According to Alli himself, it was not at all.
“It was not deliberate”, the 19-year-old said according to The Daily Mail. “I would never do that.
“Football always gets a bit heated but we shook hands and that’s fine. I told him what happened, he said it was ok and we moved on. I explained it to him and we leave it behind now.”
Alli has had an exceptional season with the title contending Spurs, but has already accumulated nine yellow cards in all competitions. Coach Mauricio Pochettino said he will look at the video and talk to his player.
“My personality is that I like to express myself and that is not something I will look to change,” Alli added. “Do you need an aggressive streak to thrive? You could say that.
“A lot of the great players have that mentality. I want to be the best I can and if that’s what I need to do it, that’s what I do.”
