Chelsea have put a world-record price tag of £73 million on star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in an attempt to ward off interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to the Evening Standard.
At the moment, Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon is still the most expensive goalkeeper in football history. The Old Lady payed nearly £40 million to Parma for his services in 2001.
However, if Courtois is sold by the Blues at their current price tag, he would overtake Buffon in this regard. The report claims that the 23-year-old Belgium international wants a return to the Primera Division, after spending three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid.
Recently, Courtois also revealed he prefers playing with his country’s defence. “We’re still conceding too many goals, and that’s not entirely the defence’s fault, even though I prefer playing with Belgium’s back four”, he told RTBF, according to Goal.
Still, Los Blancos have been unclear about their move for a new goalkeeper, with some reports stating they are happy with Keylor Navas, and others stating they still want to lure in Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.
The Evening Standard believes Real will only pursue Courtois, who has more than three years of his contract remaining, if they fail to get a deal done for De Gea.
