During the weekend, Manchester United suffered a 1-0 loss at West Bromwich Albion, as Salomon Rondon hit the net in the 66th minute and the Red Devils played 75 minutes with ten men due to Juan Mata’s red card.
It was United’s eight loss of the season, who saw West Ham jump over them to sixth place in the standings, as United are now seventh with 47 points, a place that would gain them no place in Europe next season.
Louis van Gaal opted to start Mata, Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick in a three-man midfield, placing Morgan Schneiderlin on the bench. The Frenchman was allowed to replace Herrera at the hour mark, but was unable to guide the Red Devils to a win.
The Dutch coach probably had the Europa League tie with Liverpool in his mind, but few understood why van Gaal left the 26-year-old on the bench, because United have lost just two times when he was in the starting lineup, against Swansea and Sunderland.
Meanwhile, the Old Trafford club have suffered six defeats when Schneiderlin didn’t start the game.
The Frenchman joined United in a £26.25 million deal this summer from Southampton.
