Manchester United look to have started their squad overhaul as reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed that the Red Devils are on the verge of completing a deal for Renato Sanches.
According to Di Marzio, United are close to complete the transfer for £46.7 million paid in four years, which would make the 18-year-old Sanches Benfica’s most-expensive sale, beating Axel Witsel’s £31.5 million move to Zenit St Petersburg in 2012.
United opened discussions in January for the talented teenager and were willing to structure a deal similar to the one they struck with Monaco for Anthony Martial, which now seems to pay off again.
The Red Devils have been admirers of the teenager following his breakthrough into the Portuguese outfit’s first team this season and have watched Sanches extensively in recent months, with the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona also among those interested.
Sanches is represented by Jorge Mendes, who also handles the affairs of Jose Mourinho, the leading candidate to replace Louis Van Gaal at Old Trafford. Mourinho had tried unsuccessfully to take Sanches to Chelsea during his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The 18-year-old midfielder has made 22 league appearances and six in the Champions League for Benfica, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
