Scoring goals is a forward’s primary objective. Some current Premier League forwards are very adept at hitting the net. Just think about Jamie Vardy, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero.
However, the Premier League is not the easiest league to play in and there are more than a couple of forwards who have not been able to score a goal, despite playing an extensive amount of minutes.
Therefore, let’s take a look at five of the most well-known forwards who have failed to hit the net in the English top-flight during their career.
5. Markus Rosenberg (West Brom)
After a fine career with the likes of Ajax and Werder Bremen, the Swedish striker joined The Baggies on a free transfer in 2012. But in 902 minutes and 28 appearances for West Brom, Rosenberg could not hit the net in the Premier League. He left the club in February 2014 for Malmo.
4. Juan Cuadrado (Chelsea)
The Colombian joined the Blues in the summer of 2014 from Fiorentina, but failed to make an impression at Stamford Bridge. He played 1.098 minutes in 13 league appearances for Chelsea, but was unable to score. This season, he was loaned to Juventus and could make a return with Antonio Conte taking over as coach.
3. Giovani dos Santos (Tottenham)
The Spurs brought in the Mexican in 2008 from Barcelona for £4.50 million. However, in 1.214 minutes and 17 appearances for Tottenham, dos Santos didn’t score a single goal. No wonder he was send on loan to Ipswich, Galatasaray and Racing Santander, before being sold to Mallorca in 2012 for only £750k.
2. Yaya Sanogo (Arsenal – Crystal Palace)
The young Frenchman was once hailed as a huge talent, joining the Gunners in 2013 from Auxerre on a free transfer. But 1.298 minutes and 21 appearances for Arsenal and Crystal Palace later, Sanogo has still not scored a goal in the Premier League. He’s currenlty on loan at Charlton, scoring three goals in five matches.
1. Andy van der Meyde (Everton)
At one point in his career, the Dutchman was one of Europe’s best winger. Not a star, but a very valuable player. He played for Ajax and Inter before joining The Toffees in 2005 for £6.75 million. However, in 1.395 minutes and 20 league appearances, van der Meyde failed to hit the net even once and left the club in 2009 before retiring three years later.
Sunderland’s Ola Toivonen is the forward with the longest goalless streak in the current league. The Swede hasn’t found the net in 669 minutes and 12 appearances for the Black Cats. The forward with the longest goalless streak in history is Newcastle’s Nile Ranger, who failed to score in 2.315 minutes and 26 appearances.
