Manchester United have maintained interest in Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan for quite some time now. However, according to Portuguese publication A Bola, the Argentina international is headed elsewhere in the summer transfer window.
The report states that the 28-year-old, who recently claimed that he might leave Benfica in the summer, is close to signing a four-year deal with Atletico Madrid. Gaitan is expected to cost around £20 million to Diego Simeone’s side.
“I’ve been [at Benfica] for a long time, and this is a very emotional time. I don’t know if this is the end or not, but the time is coming. I’ve had great people around me for the many years I’ve spent at this club. I have been treated wonderfully ever since my arrival. I don’t want to say that this is it, but the time is approaching”, Gaitan said on TVi24.
He was one of the stars of Benfica’s success in Portuguese League this year. He scored 11 goals and provided 19 assists in 37 appearances for his club, making it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Meanwhile, according to Brazilian daily Globoesporte (via ASà, Barcelona have received formal offers from Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid for their star Neymar.
According to the report, the Brazilian is set to sign a new contract with the Catalan club before the start of next season, but he is keeping his options open in case the ongoing negotiations break down.
Neymar’s current contract runs until 2018, and he is expected to sign a new contract that will tie him down to Barcelona until 2022.
