Pity poor Montse Benitez, wife of Rafael, who would have been faced with an all too familiar scene this morning. Her husband will have scattered pieces of paper all over the floor of their Wirral home, each with a different solution to how Liverpool should have performed at Wigan’s DW Stadium last night. Sadly for the Reds, their manager’s plans never came to fruition, and a defeat that was as damaging as any Liverpool have suffered this season became depressingly obvious to the club’s supporters as the game panned out. They’ve been here far too often before, and Benitez wok

Tuchel's tactics terrific in victory over Hoffenheim

FSV Mainz 05 deservedly won only their second game on the road this season as an Aristide Bancé strike meant Mainz fans had the rare joy of celebrating in another team's stadium. Thomas Tuchel's side had only gained seven points from their previous 12 away fixtures but a perfectly executed tactical display to frustrate their fellow mid-table opposition in the Rhein-Neckar-Arena ensured three points could be added to that total.

After a gutting 2009, the exciting run in the FA Cup has galvanised the Royals squad and instilled a sense of fearlessness that has been evident in recent performances. Even so, few would have expected Brian McDermott’s team to dominate the first half in quite the way they did; Reading were rampant against a Villa side that failed to get in to g

Club Focus – Everton – Goodbye Landon, for now...

Everton’s 5-1 romp over Hull City on Sunday was more than just the Blues’ biggest win of the season - it was, barring a late change of mind from LA Galaxy - Landon Donovan’s last appearance at Goodison Park. The American’s loan expires the day after Everton face Birmingham City next Saturday and, as things stand, he will return home until at least July, when the summer transfer window opens.

Few knew what to expect when Donovan’s signature was announced in mid-December. An obvious example is Wembley, which bears enormous historical significance, and the FA Cup semi-finals and final offer the chance to play there for those that progress that far.

For Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, Craven Cottage is proving to be every bit as iconic as the home of football. A disastrous performance at Fulham’s home ground in November 2008 proved to be something of a watershed in the Brazilian shot-stopper’s career in English football. The Villans will now play for the second time at the Wembley stadium in what will be an exciting clash against current FA Cup holders, Chelsea. Martin O’Neill was quick to comment on the draw; "We are delighted to be in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and we will take on anybody. For much of this season Newcastle have garnered a reputation as one of the most solid and reliable teams in the Championship, able to grind out results when not playing at their best.

Recently that reputation has been severely dented as they have served up some absolute goal fests in many of their recent home games. On Saturday against 10-men Barnsley they produced another dazzling performance as they were hit for six. That means that the Magpies have now scored 20 goals in their last five home games, with only three goals conceded at the other end of the pitch.

Fulham news - Cottagers chase Dawson and Rakytskyi, Melo to miss UEFA clash, Juventus preview

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Fulham. Looking more closely, it was less about under performing front men as it was fine defending throughout by both sides. The way the game played out certainly suited Roy Hodgson more than his opposite number as, despite Spurs seeing a fair bit of the ball, Mark Schwarzer was only really troubled on two occasions. Yesterday's article FIFA Executive Committee - Sometimes less is more highlighted two recent proposals from FIFA that had made it as far as the International Football Association Board (IFAB). An overview of the process may be useful to anybody not familiar with it. FIFA put forward a list of issues for discussion, with a view to change. The IFAB then analyse these and make proposals (or not) that go back to the FIFA executive committee at their next meeting. A sublime performance from Everton reignited the Blues’ European hopes and pushed Hull City closer to the relegation trapdoor, leaving Toffees fans ruing what might have been with a full complement of players all season and the Tigers left staring into the Championship. Inter are not losing, but with three points for a win, a few draws can have the same impact. Milan could have cut their rivals' lead to a solitary point with a successful trip to the eternal city. This would have put enormous pressure on the Nerazurri's game with Genoa tomorrow. The home side lay in third, just three points further back thanks to a run of 16 games unbeaten. With a full strength midfield cohort to choose from, Fabio Capello’s selection of Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and Theo Walcott to start the match appears to signal his preferred selection for the World Cup. Of these four, only Walcott possesses what would be deemed ‘genuine pace.’ Upon his arriva

FIFA Executive Committee - Sometimes less is more

The next meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee in Zurich takes place on the 18th and 19th of this month. One can imagine that debating the minute details of a tournament in a far-flung corner of the globe can leave a feeling that this was not what they envisaged when they took the role. So like many politicians, President Blatter and his football ‘cabinet’ sometimes feel the need to meddle with something that is not broken to justify their own existence. The leaked details about two of the items likely to be on the agenda are cases in point.

One of the recurring themes this season is that when a break in domestic football occurs due to an international fixture, the talking at Old Trafford does not subside as the lack of football often gives an opportunity to air opinions about the financing of the club. The fans have been making their opinions known about the club’s current owners - the Glazer family - and the current financial situation throughout the season, with planned protests and various other campaigns. Without a midweek playing fixture, however, it is often time for an important figure within the club to

Club Focus - Aston Villa - Villa players despondent after cup-final defeat

Wayne Rooney’s winning header meant that Martin O’Neill must continue his tenure in wait for his first piece of silverware at Aston Villa.

There is no doubt that the Villa players and fans alike will feel downhearted, especially after the Villans matched United for long periods during the game, even feeling they may have had a good opportunity to win it. Villa played with width and penetration, they were quick to the ball, strong in the tackle and Gabriel Agbonlahor’s pace was problematic for Nemanja Vidic throughout the game.

Arsenal have had a break from European action this week due to international friendlies, but sadly this is not the only break concerning Arsenal after Aaron Ramsey became the latest Arsenal player to suffer an horrific injury.

Arsene Wenger refuses to estimate when the Welsh starlet will return, but a successful operation to reduce the fractures of his tibia and fibula set him on the long road to recovery. The immediate aftermath of the incident produced a harrowing scene and while such a sickening injury is agonising for any player, it is more so for one of

Club Focus - Tottenham - Crouch likely to be bench-bound despite England heroics

The nation’s attention may have switched to international affairs this week but the spotlight settled on a Tottenham player, as Peter Crouch enjoyed a matchwinning cameo from the substitute bench for England at Wembley.

Crouch will now hope that he gets the chance to play match-winner for his club on Saturday and earn himself a quick return to the national stadium. A trip to Fulham stands between Spurs and an FA Cup Semi Final date at Wembley, but for Crouch there is no certainty that his England heroics will translate into a starting spot when Harry Redknapp na

Club Focus - Sunderland - Sunderland must change to a 4-5-1 formation to reverse their fortunes

With Sunderland’s winless run ever expanding, big changes are needed in order for the Black Cats to secure Premier League football for a fourth season running.

The system that Steve Bruce is currently deploying is proving woefully inadequate to get the best out of his players. The Black Cats have acquired some very talented individuals over three summers of big spending but many of them are finding their key assets redundant in a rigid 4-4-2 system that is not producing results. Top of the table Newcastle United return to action on Saturday with a home match against Barnsley. Following on from last weekend’s solid win over Watford and a recent run of good form confidence should be sky high in the Newcastle camp.

They now hold an eight point lead over Nottingham Forest in third place, with the double bonus of a game in hand and a home game against them to come. Liverpool fans, touch any nearby wooden tabletops, pinch yourselves and cross your fingers. None of your players have come back from playing for their countries nursing any knocks, a bizarre development after a couple of years in which international injuries have become the norm. Fans woke up on Thursday morning fearing the worst, yet it never happened. An odd, but welcome occurrence.

The Championship is still the most important item on the Reading agenda with survival still far from guaranteed, but things look a lot brighter than they did at the start of the cup run. John Terry’s post accusation form has been uninspiring at best - largely at fault for the opening Milan goal last Wednesday amongst a number of notable mistakes in the recent Premier League fixtures, it seems a rest as short as Valentine’s Day is yet to be justified. Peter Crouch and Shaun Wright-Phillips were the heroes of the hour coming off the bench to score the vital goals as England defeated Egypt 3-1. It was not the most enthralling match, but non-competitive internationals rarely are. This was a match destined to be a match of two halves with plenty of substitutes being made throughout the second period. Upon warming down, the Hannover 96 players saw a large section of the fans stay behind and applaud their team for the valiant but fruitless efforts they had made in the match.
