Ligue 1 action round-up - Week 4 - August 29/30, 2009

Saturday saw the fourth week of Le Championnat and with a few intriguing matches in store there was the promise of goals and drama - and Ligue 1 did not disappoint. Bafetimbi Gomis got Lyon’s match against Nancy off to the perfect start with the opening goal, while fellow new boy Lisandro Lopez soon added to the score with another goal for his new club. Nancy managed to pull one back through Yousouff Hadji but Lyon put paid to any hopes of a comeback after Michel Bustos re-established the two goal lead and put the result beyond any doubt. Auxerre managed to grab their first point of the new season away at Boulogne, holding the hosts to a 0-0 draw. Elsewhere Lens and Rennes went into their match both defending unbeaten records, and as the sides shared the spoils in an exciting 2-2 draw, they both keep their unbeaten records for another week. Ismael Bangoura gave the visiting Rennes side the lead but this was cancelled out from the penalty spot by Yohann Dermont. After the interval both sides lost a player as Lens’ Marcos Ramos and Yann M’Vila of Rennes received their marching orders. Issam Jemaa looked to have taken all three points for the hosts but could not hold firm and Asamoah Gyan snatched a point for the visitors. Lorient picked up a solid 1-0 win over Le Mans, with the only goal coming in the second half from Marama Vahirua, while St Etienne took their first three points of the campaign at home to Grenoble, who now slip to the bottom of the table. Monaco suffered defeat at the hands of Sochaux - Vaclav Sverkos scoring the vital goal from the penalty spot after 23 minutes, whereas Montpellier recorded an impressive 3-0 win away to Nice. Geoffrey Dernis scored the opener after just four minutes, the second and third goals coming from Victor Montano and Lillian Compan who secured a comfortable win for the away side.
Sunday saw the champions and their potential usurpers in action at the Stade Velodrome as Marseille entertained Bordeaux, although unfortunately entertainment was the last thing on offer as the two sides cancelled each other out in a dour 0-0 draw. The draw ended Bordeaux’s record breaking run of fourteen wins in a row in Ligue 1. PSG managed to keep pace with the leading pack as they recorded a very comfortable 3-0 win at home to the out of form Lille. PSG took the lead after Jeremy Clement smashed home a half-volley from the edge of the area and the lead was doubled by Peguy Luyindula and a 90th minute strike from Christophe Jallet sealed the victory. Valenciennes managed to get off the mark, and in doing so condemned Grenoble to the foot of the table, as they beat Toulouse 1-0. Valenciennes winner came, somewhat dramatically, in the 87th minute from substitute Mamadou Samassa. Toulouse will be disappointed as they lost only once all of last season, so to have their first defeat inflicted by struggling Valenciennes will not sit well with the team and their fans. Bordeaux stay on top of Ligue 1 on goal difference despite dropping points at Marseille and are joined at the summit by Lyon and PSG. Grenoble are now the only side in the division yet to pick a point and they will be unlikely to change this as they travel to Bordeaux for their next match.
