Ex-Liverpool defender Lawrensen criticises Liverpool documentary

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has slammed both his former club and it’s new manager Brendan Rodgers for allowing a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ programme on the club to be filmed.

The American documentary, Being: Liverpool, has courted controversy since news of its conception emerged, with sensitive issues such as Kenny Daglish’s sacking by the Liverpool owners and a pre-season dressing down given to youngster Raheem Sterling by boss Rodgers appearing on the show.

Lawrenson, writing in his Daily Mirror column, believes Rodgers should have thought twice before agreeing to the programme.

“What on earth is Brendan Rodgers doing in this programme Being: Liverpool?” asked Lawrenson. “I have to say - I’m sorry - tawdry. A real error of judgement for him to have agreed to appear in it. Why did he agree to it? He has come into a football club steeped in history and tradition.”

“I’m sorry, I just think this show comes across as American schmalz,” continued Lawrenson, now a pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day. “It’s totally ill-advised and some of the stuff that I have seen so far in the first three episodes is cringeworthy. I think everybody shares that point of view. The problem is, once you get American intent on doing it and intent on getting everyone involved it’s extremely difficult.”

Liverpool are yet to win in the league at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers after encountering a stubborn Stoke City side in a goalless draw on Sunday and the Reds currently sit a lowly 14th in the table.

Grow up Lawrensen. Brendan Rodgers had no choice, the contracts for the documentary were signed and sealed long before he was employed. Liverpool is owned by FSG and they make the decisions and take their cut from the cash generated.
