Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has hailed Roy Hodgson’s decision to call Jonjo Shelvey into the England senior squad for the first time, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey has been promoted from the under 21s squad to the senior side to face San Marino and Poland in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The 20-year old-midfielder has impressed for the Reds so far this season alongside Gerrard in midfield and the skipper believes that Shelvey’s development is warranted with his place in the squad.

Gerrard said:I’m really pleased for Jonjo. He has been improving all the time since he arrived at Liverpool and has grown into a good footballer with good vision who can create and score goals. He also listens which means he will only get better with more games and experience.

Shelvey’s third goal of the season came in the 3-2 home defeat against Udinese in the Europa League last Thursday and was initially in Stuart Pearce’s squad for the fixture with Serbia on Friday night. However, Hodgson has taken the decision to move him into the senior fold and Shelvey will be available for the fixture on Tuesday against Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland as he still has a one-match international ban to serve.
