Steven Gerrard, the captain of Liverpool and England, has insisted that now the Football Association’s development centre, St George’s Park, has opened, there can be no excuses for failure from the national team, according to the Liverpool Echo.

St George’s Park was officially opened on Tuesday by Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, with the complex costing a reported £105m. And while the site, based in Burton-on-Trent, is not expected to produce results immediately - chairman David Sheepshanks spoke of a decade’s wait - Gerrard believes the facilities are such that success should be demanded rather than wished.

An impressed Gerrard said: “The place has blown me away. All the lads are buzzing to be here. We’re lucky to have facilities like this. It’s a long-term plan and hopefully it can bring success to the national teams.

Now we’ve got the best stadium in the world and the best facilities. We’re taking away all the excuses the players might use in the future,” the midfielder added.

The facility has been more than 10 years in the making, having first been proposed by Howard Wilkinson, a title-winning manager with Leeds United, as far back as 2001. The 330 acre site will be home to the 24 England teams, including youth teams in both the men’s and women’s game.
