Brendan Rodgers blasts Shearer for Joe Allen criticism

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has criticised Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer for voicing his concerns on Joe Allen’s performances so far this season. The ex-England and Newcastle striker has been a vocal critic of the Welshman’s performances this season, questioning the effect Rodgers’ £15 million summer signing from Swansea had on matches.

However, according to the Mirror, Rodgers has brushed away those remarks and praised Allen for his early displays in a Liverpool shirt and even comparing him to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

“I saw something the other day criticising Joe Allen for not playing risk passes,” said Rodgers. “Unbelievable - so-called pundits who don’t know the dynamics of a team and how it functions.”

“Joe’s role is to keep the ball. And that, in Britain, is a special talent. It is why Paul Scholes is still playing to his age. It is such a rare talent for a midfielder to rarely give the ball away. People have talked about him and his fee, but in time he will be an absolute bargain.”

Following their goalless draw with Stoke at Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool remain without a home league win under Brendan Rodgers so far this season and lie a lowly 14th after seven matches played.

Allen is currently away with the Wales squad as Chris Coleman’s team prepare for World Cup qualification clashes with Scotland on Friday before travelling to Croatia four days later in search of their first points in this qualification campaign.
