Jagielka welcomes competition for England places

Phil Jagielka believes the retirement from England duty of John Terry will result in competition for places in the centre of Roy Hodgson’s defence that will prove healthy for the national team, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Terry stepped away from England after the Football Association persisted with a charge relating to the incident involving Terry and Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, for which Terry was cleared in court but found guilty of by the FA’s independent panel and subsequently fined and banned for four games.

With Terry out of the picture and Rio Ferdinand’s days as an international seemingly numbered, Jagielka is one of the main contenders to become a first-choice for England, and while the Everton defender does not believe there is a standout choice for Hodgson, he feels the competition will be beneficial to the side.

Jagielka said: “With John deciding to call it a day, it opens the door even more. It is not too cut out who is first name down and that only makes it healthy. No one is guaranteed a place any more.

The Telegraph adds that Jagielka is expected to line up for England against Poland alongside his former Everton teammate Joleon Lescott, now a Premier League winner with Manchester City.
