Liverpool to announce Anfield stay

Monday 15 October 2012

Liverpool are expected to announce their intention to stay at Anfield as the city council makes public its efforts to regenerate the area around the stadium, ESPN has reported.

The club’s principal owner, John W. Henry, is said to be a supporter of the decision to remain at the club’s current home, despite efforts to move to a new site having gone on for more than a decade. Henry also is understood to have rejected the suggestion that Liverpool need to build a new stadium in order to improve their match day income.

Houses around Anfield would have to be purchased and demolished using Compulsory Purchase Orders, with the cost of the endeavour not yet known. It had previously been confirmed earlier this year that Liverpool City Council was to knock down empty houses near Anfield already owned by the club, but it was not confirmed to be part of a stadium redevelopment initiative.

Liverpool have played at Anfield since the club was formed in 1892, the ground previously housing Everton who left after a row with the landlord, who in turn formed his own side, who play on the site to this day.
