Michael Carrick believes his Manchester United and England teammate Danny Welbeck has reacted to the arrival of Robin van Persie at Old Trafford in the best possible way, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Man Utd’s four England representatives

United signed van Persie from Arsenal over the summer, bringing him into direct competition with Welbeck for a place alongside Wayne Rooney in Sir Alex Ferguson’s United line-up, but Carrick feels Welbeck has risen to the challenge posed by the presence of the top scorer in the Premier League last season.

Welbeck was on target twice for England against San Marino, his first goals for club or country this season, and could keep his place under Roy Hodgson for the trip to Poland, the Mirror adds, despite Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe being poised to return to the side.

Carrick admitted that he is naturally inclined to back his United colleague but praised the effort made by Welbeck to keep pace with his competitors for club and country. Carrick said: “People were looking at him when we signed Van Persie saying, ‘Where is his position, where is he going to fit in?’ But he showed he is still a major part of it and he was terrific against San Marino.
